What Is Physiotherapy?

Physiotherapy is a medical term that refers to physical therapy. Many individuals are familiar with physical therapy due to the common need for it among sports players and individuals who may have gotten injured or experienced a chronic illness.

There is also a common misconception that physiotherapy is only needed when it comes to rehabilitating a certain part of the body, but this is actually far from true. Instead, physical therapy may also be recommended for those who are simply trying to improve their range of motion, their physical movement, or overall wellness. Continue reading to learn more about physiotherapy and what is involved.

A quick guide to physiotherapy

Below is an overview of what physiotherapy is, including what to expect and what might be involved. This information can be quite helpful to those looking into their treatment and wellness options.

Physiotherapy, defined

There are five different types of physiotherapy that physical therapists offer:

  • Geriatric physical therapy targets individuals who are elderly and have experienced an injury that has caused pain, dysfunction, or both
  • Pediatric physical therapy works with individuals who are babies, infants, or children. What is involved typically tends to be geared more toward a friendly and welcoming environment, thus ensuring little to no anxiety or fear in the young patient
  • Neurological physical therapy is typically needed after a severe brain injury. Those who have chronic brain conditions may also regularly undergo neurological physiotherapy to help with daily life management
  • Occupational physical therapy focuses on one's motor skills and how they connect with one's range of motion or movement
  • Rehabilitative physical therapy is needed after an injury or illness. When either of these causes one a loss of function or to be in pain, this type of physiotherapy helps to rehabilitate the individual back to normal

What to expect

When undergoing physiotherapy, one may be curious about what to expect. Thankfully, there is a lot of information on the topic, which helps patients learn more and prepare ahead of time. It is also important to know that one's goal will dictate what type of physical therapy is administered.

For example, those who have been severely injured may need in-depth physiotherapy exercises to rehabilitate them. On the flip side, those who are simply looking to improve their life may be provided a wealth of resources to learn how to practice such exercises at home.

Other things to know

Physiotherapy often takes time and patience, and results will likely not happen overnight. Because a lot of physiotherapies are trial and error, it's important to keep in mind that one approach might not always work, which means there may be a lot of different approaches attempted.

Furthermore, the patient has to put in effort, meaning, it is not simply up to the physical therapist to do all of the work. Lifestyle changes might be required, too.
