Physical Therapy Can Provide Relief From Tendinitis
Tendinitis is a painful soft tissue condition that is often the result of the repetitive strain of part of the body. We have been treating more of these types of injuries in 2020 as people have become more active along with taking on new hobbies such as running, playing tennis and golf, and basketball. New hobbies are not always the factor that cause tendinitis but your working habits can cause pain in your tendons. Resolving this pain can be difficult due to the need to use a particular part of the body for employment or physical activity. At Orange County Physical Therapy in Newport Beach, we can help people find relief from tendinitis through physical therapy and complementary treatments. Our physical therapists will determine the underlying condition, create a treatment plan, and teach you how to avoid re-injury and pain going forward.
Tendinitis happens when a part of the body is overused and causes inflammation in the tendons. Unlike ligaments that connect bone to bone the tendon is a fibrous cord that attaches muscles to the bone. A very large tendon we all can feel is the quadriceps tendon just below your knee cap.
When the tendon is overused, it cannot do its job effectively and inflammation sets in. Inflammation is the body's healing response to an injury, but if the cause of the injury isn't treated, the inflammation becomes chronic and the bursts of pain continue. The tendons cannot heal because they are being used in the same fashion that caused the injury in the first place, resulting in constant pain that happens every time that area of the body is used or moved.
When left alone aides such as straps, CBD oils and creams, pain and anti-inflammatory drugs only mask or give temporary relief.
Common Types of Tendinitis
The condition can happen anywhere in the body, but some types of tendinitis are more common than others due to the popularity of certain sports, requirements of employment, exercises, and even crafts. The most common types of tendinitis include:
- Rotator cuff tendinitis
- Runners knee or patellofemoral pain AKA patellar tendinitis
- Tennis or golfer's elbow
- Achilles heel or Achilles tendinitis
- Hip pain AKA trochanteric bursitis
Physical Therapy Helps Resolve the Pain of Tendinitis
The core cause of tendinitis is the overuse of a particular group of muscles and their tendons. Any activity that requires the repetitive use of a part of the body in a specific fashion can cause tendinitis. Our physical therapist will address the sequence of movements you engage in during the activity that has caused the tendinitis. We then help you find ways to move that will not aggravate the tendons going forward.
